Tethering the dogs outside the motorhome is something that we only do when we feel necessary.  As Mac n Tosh are quite young we need to tether on occasions to stop them running off and causing chaos on campsites or diving in to the sea to pinch someone’s surf board.

Placing then on a restraint is acceptable if it is done for a short period or while supervised and if the tether is secured in such a way that it cannot become entangled with other objects. Collars should be comfortable and fitted properly and we never use choke chains. Keeping them tethered for long periods is never acceptable.

So how do you teacher and what do you attached the dog too you may ask?

Well rather than tie them to one of those large corkscrews type things (which only work in grass), we secured a couple of stainless steel or galvanised d’ring/eyelet’s to our van.  We have four fixings at various points (on the underside) around the van, none are visible so don’t look funny.

That way it’s a doddle to clip their lead to the D ring, as and when you need to.  We have a couple located near the entrance door, so as soon as you step out or in you can access straight away. It also means Mac n Tosh can see us and feel reassured that we not too far away.

Those same d’ring/eyelets are also a great way to clip and secure your door open with the aid of a piece of rope.  Motorhomes and caravans usually have a door clip to keep them open, but sadly they can be useless in windy conditions. We just attached a length of thin rope to the inside of the door and then clip the door open on the eyelet, no more trapped fingers or legs when the door slams closed.

We also use the same type of d’ring/eyelets inside our motorhome.  We’ve fastened two D’rings on either side of the cab area near the windscreen. Then tied a discreet washing line, so we can hang washing to dry.

Hi I’ve ordered some of the clips to attach the dog go but was just wondering where on your van you’ve attached them? Not keen on drilling into the body work?

I have screwed them under the van, two near the back doors, also one near the front under the gas locker, the underside of your van will be plywood and fibreglass so its not a problem, you could also screw it to the side of the step on the aluminium arms, just make sure it will still open and close properly and not catch the bodywork. The dogs can get in the way of the doorway though if placed here. If possible put them in a position where they can be used for both dog and tying the doors open but easily accessible.
