When we first got a motorhome we did what every other owner does and considers the options available for parking on uneven ground. There are essentially two choices available to get your vehicle level that don’t cost the earth. Option one is to purchase some type of ramp that allows you to drive up one or more and get level. Option 2 is to make Option one yourself. Now option 2 is easy enough, just screw some lengths of timber together but by the time you have added enough timber to get a reasonable height they weigh quite a lot. Especially when they get wet. Option 1 became our preferred choice.
The problem is though there are lots of different ones available on the market. Our first van was over 4 tonnes and our current van is way over 5 tonnes. Given its weight we needed something that could take the weight comfortably. A brand that most people with be familiar with is Fiamma and is readily available everywhere. After looking at different types we opted for the Fiamma level system.
There are several versions available all with very similar names but we choose the Jumbo system over the other ones. Even though the other ones in the range do the same thing they didn’t seem as sturdy as the Jumbo model (even other brands). Most of the wheel ramps on the market are made out of some type of thin thermoplastic. Over the years the amount we have seen that shatter is quite alarming. The Jumbo model though is manufactured from UV-resistant polyethylene that is approximately 8mm thick. The advantage with this material over the others is that it is much stronger and much less brittle. The downside is that they are also a little heavier than the others.
Because they are much stronger you can also “stack” them to get even more height, if required. The Chunky texture allows your tyres to get a good grip. They are also a little wider than most others on the market too. This has the advantage of being able to ensure that all the tyres width is supported. It still leaves a little manoeuvring room getting on them so you drive up them properly the first time. Rather than not up and down just because your a little off centre. We also prefer them as you can stop at any point on the ramp unlike may other that are designed to allow you to stop at only 2 or 3 positions.
Below is a chart showing Fiamma models sizes etc.
We have used the ramps on every imaginable surface. Although they are now looking a little less shiny than when we bought them four years ago they are not damaged in anyway. They don’t slip and slide on wet tarmac. They don’t crack or break when used on loose stones. Just get em out, drive up in one go and then have piece of mind they are not going to disintegrate like others we have seen on the market.
Although we have not used them, the Magnum version are made from the same materials and offer many of the Jumbos benefits but are also smaller and lighter. We considered them but the extra width and height of the Jumbo seemed like the obvious choice to us. You can also get a nylon bag too to store them in.
We have milenco. Our van is always very nose down. Fiamma wasn’t enough for us x
Found your website bu accident and so glad I did. This article couldnt have come at a more apt time. Well presented and infirmative.
Thanks John, glad it helped out
Always enjoy your practical articles, so helpful, informative and no bullshit. You need to do more like this and a few videos would be really helpful too
Thanks for the tip. This will save us wasting money on smaller/cheaper versions. I’ve added this to our must have list for when we buy our motorhome.:)
We used Fiamma’s Level Up ramps for a few years but they curled on soft ground and skidded away on anything remotely smooth. Next time I’ll try these
Thank You 🙂
Wish we knew this before. Had small flimsy Fiammas ages ago, but too small for a large van. Did some research and at the time people recommended Milenco. 4 years on, our have lots of bits snapped off … and we hardly ever use them..
