Here We Go: Trip 2018 48 Comments

Its a glorious sunny afternoon, and after six months at home with nose to the grind stone it was time to hit the road. Mac n Tosh cry with excitement as they leap in Vin the motorhome and scurry round checking nothing has changed. But within minutes their excitement breaks out in to mini dude scrap and they are both summons to their bed.  Ears down but tails still wagging, this means one thing for the dudes, beach, surf boards and freedom.

We pop on the tunes and sing our hearts out all the way to Dover. A quick sleep followed by a early morning ferry to Calais, a clean up operation due to a dicky doggy belly, two nose pegs and we’re off again.  We planned on spending a day on Calais beach but with heavy rain we shuffled along out of France, in to Belgium, a refuel in Luxembourg and then in to Germany. I nodded and dribbled all the way, only waking when Craig poked my ear or flicked my nose (click on the images to increase size)

Taking to the road has always been a comfort and an escape for us. It began with long trip in our first car, a Nissan Micra. With trips hugging the UK coastline before a spontaneous road trip testing our nerves in France. We got the bug and since then we’ve travelled to where ever seems good at the time.

Our first true stop and toot is at the city of Ulm, Germany.  We arrive late afternoon, so sit back, chill in the sunshine and crack open a bottle of wine.

With the throngs of spring building from its time worn streets and mists rising from the River Danube, late spring is a particularly atmospheric time to visit Ulm. Since the middle ages, corruption, wars, and epidemics undermined the city’s wealth. Then in 1944, its glorious historic core was destroyed during bombing raids. Fortunately, its giant Münster came out relatively unscathed. Today, a great deal of the city has been replaced by modern and stylish buildings.

The Gothic Münster, standing sentinel over the surrounding region since 1377, is the obvious place to start. Trek up the largest church tower (530ft), consider the architectural marvels of the medieval world and at the peak admire the view. The climb up its 768 steps offers amazing views of the Black Forest and on clearer days, the Alps.

For a slightly more cultural spin on Ulm’s historical riches, wander around the market square loaded with farmer stalls – selling everything from cheese and pickles to fresh asparagus and highly scented strawberries. With shopping bags full of fresh goodies, we went off path over to the old quarters. The birth place of Einstein. Crooked timber framed houses all perfectly positioned amid wandering streams.  Ducks, water lilies and well pruned flower baskets added to the fine views as we looked back over Ulm towards the münster.

Lunch is a relaxed if elegant affair, with an array of freshly baked croissants and selection of tangy marmalade’s before we hit the road, again.  Rather reserved for us Lancashire folk who normal gorge on chip butties with a blob of ketchup.  Well thats it for now folks but keep tuned as we head off this afternoon for Austria.

Our Bumble free stellplatz located next to tram line, Danube river and 2 minutes from Lidl. GPS position N048.406827,E010.009285

If you’ve only just joined us why not start with one of our previous trips to Italy & Sicily in 2014, Portugal, Spain, Italy & over to Slovenia in 2015 or up through Scandinavia to the very top of Europe then down through Eastern Europe to Greece in 2016.
