The Twin Towers of St Peters, Dakovo 4 Comments

The following day, the weather remains unchanged. We utilise our time by cleaning and making Vin nice and clean. Clean bedding, clean towels, clean everything. Now, we just dread the thought of the day when we do the washing, its a mound only to be tackled with a clear sky!

By late afternoon, a welcome break in the weather. Mood in camp changes in an instant and we ran outside and made our way in to the centre of Djakovo. Another very agreeable little town, with the kinds of shops that you hardly see these days: a cheese shop, a shoe repair, ice cream parlour, a mini market and several cafes full to capacity. Seems like we are not the only ones glad to see a little sunshine. At one end of town a the Memorial statue followed by open space currently occupied by stalls and a stage in readiness for the town festival.

A dainty parish church with a shell of a 16th century mosque stands at the beginning of the main street. A pedestrianised cafe lined street invites you along to the magnificent square and cathedral of St. Peter.

With its twin towers dominating the sky line.  Built in red brick it exterior its not a pretty building but none the less, it is grand and graceful.  Inside a complete contrast with splendid marble detail and covered in well presented paintings.

Ten minutes’ walk from the centre and we are back in Vin. The street we are parked on is typical of a Croatian street in this region. At either side of the road, a thin slitter of well tendered lawn, a water trough, more lawn, a make shift path and then a row of detached houses. The houses are either plain brick with lashings of mortar that look like they aught to be rendered or they are rendered.

Notice – no front doors

From house to house, tall prison like fences and gates, which protect you from entering or even seeing beyond.  There are no front doors, you simply enter the ground of the property via the gate. Behind the fence the land (on the whole) remains open creating a community spirit. The only segregations is with barns, sheds, machinery and out buildings.

To end our evening on a high, we nip in to the off license for a selection of local beers. Cheers to sunshine!
